ABOUT BETHANY

Welcome to my page! My name is Bethany (she/her) and I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate in North Carolina. As a Nationally Certified Counselor, I love supporting clients in their mental health journey toward resilience and empowerment. I am also a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor which gives me a unique perspective to work with clients on career exploration and living with disabilities.

We are stronger than we realize, but working through past experiences, societal issues, and the complexities of life can be overwhelming. I believe mental health counseling comes into play at this intersection of resilience and needing a helping hand. I think counseling is about supporting clients as they find ways to accomplish their goals. I think that it is important to consider each unique person, a sum of all the physical, mental, spiritual, and cultural pieces.

I would describe my style of counseling as cooperative and interactive. I think the use of client-driven discussions, in-session exercises, and at-home practice, can help someone make changes, find acceptance, process emotions, and grow as an individual. I believe that we all have the answers to our own questions somewhere inside; sometimes we just need a little help finding what we are looking for.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Even before pursuing my master’s degree, my work experience reflected my desire to help others. I worked at an inpatient Behavioral Health Facility in West Virginia, where I had the opportunity to lead process and support groups and group sessions and care for individuals working through difficult situations. I have also worked as an office manager for an Elder Law Office, which helped me better understand issues faced by individuals with disabilities. These experiences led me to pursue a degree in counseling to continue supporting others.

Since graduating and working on North Carolina licensure, I have found my passion for supporting others in my field. I’m currently teaching online classes for West Virginia University’s School of Counseling and Well-Being. Working with students allows me the opportunity to use both my mental health counseling skills and my vocational rehabilitation knowledge to encourage the next generation of counselors. In the future, I hope to continue teaching and become a counseling supervisor, offering training and assistance on important issues within our community.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION

In 2020, I graduated from West Virginia University with a Master of Science in Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling. I chose this program because the dual focus gives me the opportunity to learn about two equally important, and often intersecting, fields: mental health counseling and assistance for individuals with disabilities. I am a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) and a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC). I am a Certified Grief Informed Professional (CGP).

I am a member of the American Counseling Association, American Mental Health Counselors Association, and American Rehabilitation Counseling Association and enjoy continuing to learn about the fascinating world of counseling.

Personal

Although a little piece of my heart will always live in my home of West Virginia, I love the active and diverse community here in the Raleigh-Durham region. When I’m not checking out local events, creative writing is my favorite way of managing stress and expressing myself.
